According to an article in The Guardian yesterday (9th August), Plymouth is the most cost-effective university for undergraduates. Or is it?
The articles source (Natwest) found that the average Plymouth student spends £217 per week on living and housing costs, but manages to offset this with weekly earnings of £115. In contrast the most cost inefficient place for students is supposedly Exeter, in which students spend £294 per week and make only £67 from term-time employment.
The survey also found that the city offering the lowest weekly living costs excluding rent is York (£146), while London (£221) and Leicester (£220) have the highest living costs.
Is it me or is that extremely high? I spend less than that including rent and bills! My rent in Leeds is £64 a week and most of my friends and I budget for about £60 a week on living costs bringing a total of just £124 INCLUDING rent.
The articles source is the Natwest who only interviewed 100 students at 26 universities. They must have been some of the richest students in the most expensive areas of the country! My survey of one student (me), suggests that Leeds has the lowest living costs for students.
What I can believe though is the findings on rent. Not surprisingly Oxford and London are the most expensive costing on average £92 and £91 respectively.
