Selling Old Textbooks

Old Textbooks

By now most of you will have finished your January exams and have textbooks that you will almost certainly never use ever again.

There are three main possible places where you can turn your books back into drinking money:

1. Selling at University

Most university departments have book sales in which you can sell your old books. You can also usually advertise books on noticeboards in your department. This is probably the most cost effective way of selling your books, as you do not have to pay the university any fees or have to pay for postage, however your audience may not be as wide as selling on the web.

2. Amazon Marketplace

Amazon Marketplace is an excellent and easy place to sell your old books. All you have to do is type in your books ISBN and a description of its condition and its instantly up on Amazon. Amazon gives you £2.50 (paid by the customer) for postage and packaging (always check how much it will cost you to post), however they do take a fee. This is 86p for completion, 17.5% VAT and for books a 49p administration fee. You only pay these fees if your book sells and your listing will stay up for 30 days (this is a lot longer than ebay, which has a maximum listing time of 10 days). When your item sells you will be sent an email and you have to post your item within two days of receiving the email. Finally, you will be paid in a 14 day cycle. I have used Amazon Marketplace a lot and have found it to be a good quick way of making some extra cash.

3. Ebay

The final place you may consider to sell your old books is ebay. However, although ebay may be the largest auction site on the Internet, I don’t think it has the same kind of customers for books that amazon does. You also have to consider all the fees that are involved when selling on ebay (including paypal fees) and auctions only last for a maximum of 10 days. Finally you have to pay a fee even if your book does not sell, unlike Amazon Marketplace.
