A good office suite is vital as a student, however currently the home version of Microsoft Office 2007 is £74.99 on amazon (if you didn’t get it with your computer). However, you can get almost the same packaged for nothing by using a free office suite called OpenOffice.org.
What Does The Suite Contain?
- Writer - a word processor that is very similar to Microsoft Word
- Calc - a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel
- Impress - a presentation tool like PowerPoint
- Draw - a drawing program for making diagrams
- Base - for making databases like Access
Is It Compatible With Microsoft Office?
Yup! It can read and write most files from other common software packages.
Why Is It Free?
It’s free because it is an open source software that has been created by a community.
Where Can I Download It From?
You can download the software from the OpenOffice.org website.

I think Microsoft will be forced to rethink their strategy when it comes to office software products. With Google and not to mention free products like OpenOffice nipping at their heels, I think it’s just a matter of time before Microsoft goes heavy into the subscription based model, if not free model with advertising support.

I love Office.org but I don’t think that they could replace Microsoft.
