There is a lot of good free software out there that is useful to students and below I have gone through some of the most essential for all your needs at uni.
OpenOffice
If you haven’t got Microsoft Office, then this is an indispensable free alternative. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet creator, a presentation creator, a database creator and even a drawing and maths program. It is also compatible with Microsoft Office files.
Avast! Antivirus
A brilliant antivirus program that will help to keep your computer free of annoying viruses that can get passed around at uni.
Download Avast! Antivirus Home Edition
Firefox
A much safer and faster way of browsing the internet than internet explorer. It also has loads of brilliant addons.
Paint.net
Paint.net is an excellent and simple image editor, which you can use to create and edit images and photos with ease.
Download Paint.net
GIMP
If you need something a bit more demanding than Paint.net, then GIMP is a good alternative that is similar to Photoshop. However, it is a little buggy and takes some getting used too.
DeepBurner
This is an essential program which you can use to back up all your important essays and files to CD or DVD.
Download DeepBurner
MediaMonkey
A brilliant music manager that is superior to itunes. One of its many useful features is the party mode, which allows people to request songs while making sure that they cannot alter your music library.
Pidgin
A cool free chat alternative that allows you to use all your messenger services like MSN, yahoo, MySpaceIM and AIM all at once. It also connects to facebook chat, which is especially useful.
