Having recently entered the world of macs, I have decided to compile a list of some brilliant free software that every student should have.  If you are a Windows user, check out Essential Free Software For Students.

NeoOffice

Based on the world renowned OpenOffice (also available for macs), this is an excellent alternative to the expensive Microsoft Office. It includes alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and even a few extras.

Adium

Adium is possibly my favourite free program for macs, as it allows you connect to all your instant messaging services at the same time.  It even allows you to connect to facebook chat, which is particularly useful. It is also easily customizable and is a must have for all students.

GIMP

If you need can’t quite afford the millions of pounds for Photoshop, then GIMP is a good free alternative. However, it is a little buggy and takes some getting used too.

Time Machine

Time machine comes free with every new mac and is excellent for backing up all your vital documents. However, you will need to buy an external hard drive in order to use it.

Firefox

An excellent free alternative to safari that will help to keep you safe online. It also has loads of brilliant addons.
