Staying in can be a brilliant way to save money if you’re running a little low on cash. Therefore, I have written some top tips on how to make the most of a night in with a film.

1) Free DVD Rentals

It currently costs £4.50 to rent a new DVD from Blockbusters for 5 days. However, it is possible as a student to rent DVDs for free from your university library. Obviously it depends on the individual library, however you will probably be surprised at the range of DVDs your library has.

2) Cheap Popcorn

Popcorn ready popped in a shop will cost you a couple of quid and will taste all right. However, you can make it yourself at a fraction of the price and it will taste brilliant. All you need to do is follow the recipe below:

Ingredients

Popping Corn (currently 69p at Somerfield)
Oil
Butter (optional)
Sugar (optional)
Cinnamon (optional)

Equipment

A saucepan with a LID

Method

  • Add a little oil to the saucepan on a medium heat so the oil covers the bottom of the saucepan.
  • Add a handful of popping corn to the saucepan and put on the lid.
  • Shake the saucepan while the corn pops, so that the popcorn does not stick to the bottom of the saucepan and burn.
  • When all the corn has popped, remove the lid and stir in the butter.
  • Add sugar and cinnamon or whatever other toppings you would like.
