Best Free Security Software It can be really annoying when your computer gets a virus, as it can take a lot time to get rid of and it may cost you money to get your PC repaired if you are not a computer geek. This happened to my friend last week, therefore I have decided to compose a list of the best free software for protecting your PC.

If you are in your first year, you probably use the halls network to connect to the internet, which leaves you open to certain threats and therefore you should definitely have a firewall installed on your computer. The best free firewall that I have found is Comodo Firwall Pro. I had previously used ZoneAlarm; however I found it to be a little slow. Comodo Firewall Pro on the other hand uses less resources, is easy to use and configure, and the new version even has a scanner, which scans for spyware, malware and viruses. However, the downside of both of these firewalls is that when you first install them, they will pop up with a lot of security alerts, however after you have used all your programs once, they usually go away.

Antivirus

By far the most popular free antivirus is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, which has been downloaded over 62 million times from Download.com. It is easy to use, updates everyday, provides real-time protection and uses very few system resources. Other alternatives include Avast Home Edition.

Spyware and Adware Removers

If you internet browsing is becoming slower, it is probably due to the presence of spyware on your computer. You can easily get rid of this by using popular programs like Spybot-Search and Destroy and Adaware 2007, which both update regularly. Another program you might consider is AVG Anti-Spyware. The full version is free for 30 days and then after that you can still scan your computer and update it.

Internet Browsers

Although internet explorer may be the most popular web browser in the world, it is certainly not the most secure. You should definitely consider alternatives such as Firefox and Opera, which are not only more secure, but are faster.
