Times are a little tough at the moment, therefore I have created a list of 50 money saving tips to help all students in these times of need.

1.  Loan textbooks instead of buying them.

2.  Make use of free DVDs from your university library.

3.  Buy food with a friend and share the cost.

4.  Walk instead of taking the bus or driving to uni.

5.  Get your hair cut at a beauty college.

6.  Make sure your washing is full every load.

7.  Find your cheapest petrol station using PetrolPrices.com.

8.  Take a packed lunch to uni.

9.  ALWAYS ask for a student discount!

10.  Don’t order fast food after going out, instead munch on some cereal or bread when you get back.

11.  Get Freeview instead of Sky.

12.  Shop around - don’t go for the first price you find.

14.  Go jogging instead of paying for the gym.

15.  If you really do want to join the gym, the one at uni is usually the cheapest.

16.  Budget for every week.

17.  Eat in.

18.  Make presents.

19.  Make cards.

20.  Find your cheapest pub and stick to it.

21.  In freshers week don’t pay to join millions of societies that you will never go to.

22.  Make popcorn instead of buying it.

23.  Make the most of your degree, as people with good degrees generally earn more.

24.  Phone people for free using services like skype.

25.  Share lifts.

26.  Go CouchSurfing instead of paying for a holiday.

27.  Get a Young Persons Railcard if you spend over £72 a year on train travel.

28.  Get rid of your car - do you really need it at uni?

29.  Stop smoking.

30.  Check if you are eligible for grants.

31.  Haggle!

32.  Ask for a better deal on your phone contract.

33.  Make a shopping list when you shop for food to ensure you don’t buy anything unnecessary.

34.  Advertise almost anything for free at Gumtree.

35.  Use cashback sites when buying online.

36.  Try to not buy on impulse.

37.  Buy online as it is usually cheaper (although not always).

38.  Search for student discounts near you using studentbeans.com.

39.  Look on Freecycle.org for all your free and recycling needs.

40.  Beat the ticket touts by subscribing to ticket alerts.

41.  Use OpenOffice instead of paying for Microsoft office.

42.  Bid on eBay in the middle of the night.  Check out 8 Tips For Saving On eBay.

43.  Find your cheapest supermarket using mySupermarket.

44.  Shop at markets.

45.  Wash your own car.

46.  Check your bank balance regularly.

47.  If you need to buy a textbook check out amazon marketplace, however it is not always the cheapest place.

48.  Book train tickets early-ideally 12 weeks before you travel. Check out Save Money On Train Tickets.

49.  Don’t buy ready meals, preparing your own food is usually a lot cheaper.

50.  Subscribe to Money Saving Student.

    I like this list a lot. There are a lot of things on it that most people wouldn’t think of or don’t think of, like using free software. The links are helpful sources as well.

    This is a great blog. I am not living on campus any more but I really wish I would have found something like this when I lived there. Very practical. My husband and I just started on our blog about personal finances called whereyouarenow.com because of seeing the lack of financial education we received in school. Keep it up! It looks great!
