You probably print out a lot of essays and lecture slides while at uni, which can be very expensive. However, there are a number of simple things you can do to help reduce how much you spend on printing.

1. Don’t Print Out Everything

The most obvious thing you can do is not print out anything unless it is absolutely necessary. This way you save on paper as well as ink.

2. Set The Fast Draft Setting As Default

For most printers you can set fast draft as the default print setting in the print menu. This way you save on ink without the hassle of setting fast draft every time you print.

3. Print Multiple Pages On One Piece of Paper

This is particularly useful when printing out lecture slides, which can be many pages long. Simply select handouts in the print menu and then how many slides you want per page. I find that 4 slides per page is readable.

4. Print On Both Sides Of The Paper

Some printers allow you to print on both sides of a piece of paper. This can usually be found in the printing menu.

5. Preview Before You Print

You should always look at a preview before you print to check if there are any pages with just a few lines on that are not worth printing.

6. Only Print The Selection You Need

If you do not need to have a printed copy of something, then don’t print it! You can also just print the text you need by highlighting it and then in the print menu selecting print selection.

7. Refill Your Own Cartridges

It can be cheaper to get your printer cartridges refilled instead of buying new ones. However, the reliability of refilled cartridges is not always perfect.

8. Make Use Of Your Free Printer Credits At Uni

You probably get a number of free printer credits at uni, so make the most of them!

9. Print In Greyscale

If you do not need to print in colour, then this is an easy way to save your colour ink cartridge.

10. Use GreenPrint For Free

If you are really concerned about how much you are spending or how much paper you are wasting, you could try out a free download called GreenPrint. This program shows you a preview before you print, how you can simply save on your printing costs and tells you how much you have saved overall.
